SwitchDin’s proactive CSIP-AUS v1.2 Utility Server testing strengthens interoperability for more consistent, lower-friction DER integration

SwitchDin’s Utility Server, FlexGateway, now passes all 61 tests in the published CSIP-AUS v1.2 Utility Server test suite, marking an important step towards more consistent and interoperable DER integration across Australia.

It’s a proud milestone, not only because of the result, but because of the thinking behind it.

SwitchDin began running its Utility Server against the CSIP-AUS v1.2 server tests before any customer requested it. As CSIP-AUS moved towards national implementation, SwitchDin recognised that successful communication within its own technology ecosystem would never be a sufficient measure of interoperability. The purpose of a common standard is to enable consistent communication across conforming technologies from different manufacturers. Rather than wait for testing to become a customer dependency, its engineering team acted early to validate FlexGateway’s readiness.

 

Why this matters

CSIP-AUS provides a common framework for secure communication between utility servers and distributed energy resources, including solar, batteries and other controllable energy devices.

Version 1.2, formalised through SA TS 5573:2025, introduces clearer requirements and nationally consistent testing for how these systems should behave.

CSIP-AUS can only deliver on its promise of easier DER integration if both sides of the connection behave as the standard intends. A conforming inverter or Software Communications Client needs a utility server that implements the standard consistently.

Earlier industry deployments showed why this matters. A communications client that worked with one utility server could encounter different behaviours when connecting to another. These variations created additional integration, testing and troubleshooting for equipment manufacturers, aggregators and network operators.

The CSIP-AUS v1.2 Utility Server test suite provides a repeatable way to assess server behaviour. The test harness acts as a communications client, sends defined requests and verifies that the server responds as intended by the standard.

SwitchDin’s Utility Server passes all 61 published tests, with the majority rerun regularly through the company’s continuous integration and delivery process. This helps reduce integration cost and uncertainty before either reaches a customer’s critical path. For network operators, this limits vendor-specific development, supports faster onboarding and lowers the risk of server readiness delaying deployment.

 

Contributing to a stronger industry framework

SwitchDin’s contribution went beyond testing its own technology.

During the process, SwitchDin worked closely with the Australian National University team responsible for the CACTUS platform (“CSIP-AUS Certification Testing for Utility Services” is the test harness used nationally for interoperability testing and certification).

Testing against an independently developed test harness is a two-way process, and SwitchDin approached it accordingly. By working through the suite in detail, its engineers identified several opportunities to strengthen the testing process and logic in the CACTUS open source project. These included edge cases involving how test outcomes were evaluated, how request data was referenced and how valid results were handled in a specific pagination scenario.

Rather than treating these findings as blockers, the company worked through them collaboratively with the ANU team. Through an iterative technical feedback process, SwitchDin shared reproduction steps, request and response payloads, and its assessment of the underlying causes. The company is especially proud of this contribution because it helped strengthen the testing capability for the wider industry, not only for SwitchDin.

 

Passing once is not the point. Passing every time is.

SwitchDin advocates for best practices in software engineering and was an early proponent of extending the CACTUS suite for use in continuous integration pipelines. When the required features were released, SwitchDin integrated the majority of the CACTUS server test suite directly into its own continuous integration pipeline. The applicable CACTUS tests now run automatically as a required check for every pull request and relevant merge to the main branch that affects the Utility Server.

Since this integration was introduced, these checks have run more than 150 times, quietly catching any inadvertent regressions before they reach the main branch, let alone a customer’s network. Conformance is no longer a milestone reached once. It is a property enforced with the codebase on every relevant change.

This is not SwitchDin’s first contribution to CSIP-AUS, although much of its earlier work happened quietly behind the scenes. The company built the modular CSIP-AUS Utility Server used by two distribution networks during Australia’s Flexible Exports trials. It allowed both networks to integrate through a common interface while retaining their own operational systems. That work demonstrated that open, standards-based communication to customer-owned assets could support real network services in practice.
